Overview
Announced in March 1997, UnixWare 7 is the latest UNIX operating system from SCO, the
worlds leading UNIX provider. The UnixWare 7 system delivers a multi-functional,
scalable UNIX operating environment based on the SVR5 kernel, with tightly integrated
enterprise networking services which are ideal for business critical computing. UnixWare 7
is designed to support diverse clients, to scale from small office server configurations
to large scale enterprise servers and to provide high levels of reliability, availability
and serviceability. UnixWare 7 provides Compaq server customers a powerful UNIX platform,
not only today, but will also in the future, with the planned delivery of a full 64-bit
version concurrent with the Intel Merced processor release.
Product Configurations
UnixWare 7 has been optimized for medium to large organizations looking for highly
reliable, scalable and performant departmental performance and enterprise business server
solutions. The UnixWare 7 product family consists of "purpose-built" operating
system configurations that are complimented by a range of optional services and
development tools. The UnixWare 7 operating system configuration includes:
- Enterprise Edition: For high-end enterprise servers to run
large-scale business applications and databases for decision support and on-line
transaction processing.
- Departmental Edition: For departmental servers in medium or
large organizations to run applications and reliably share business critical information
with any client including PCs, NCs, terminals and any Java-enabled browser client.
- Intranet Edition: An industrial strength intranet/Internet
server for enterprise wide web publishing and it is an ideal foundation for e-commerce,
extranet and Internet applications.
- Messaging Edition: For departmental and enterprise-wide
Internet mail and messaging servers with powerful and reliable remote messaging
capabilities, universal client access and simplified administration via built-in directory
services.
- Base Edition: A solid foundation for building dedicated or
specialized server environments, such as telecommunications equipment and other embedded
systems. It also excels as a powerful graphical workstation.
In the second half of 1998, a "purpose-built" configuration of UnixWare 7
will be available for the small and medium business and replicated site markets (the
primary focus of todays SCO OpenServer Release 5 business). For these markets,
additional migration tools for SCO OpenServer will be provided to enable customers to move
to UnixWare 7 at there own pace and with maximum investment protection.

Compaq SmartStart
Compaq SmartStart is an integration tool that configures Compaq hardware and prepares it
for software installation. Customers can benefit from SmartStart regardless of where their
operating system was purchased. UnixWare 7 customers get the following benefits when using
SmartStart 3.60 and later:
- Interview that highlights and enables configuration of Compaq server features
- Installs Compaq optimized drivers, ROMPaqs and support software
- Automatic installation of Network Interface Card
SmartStart is delivered with every Compaq server.
Compaq Insight Manager
Compaq Insight Manager is also delivered with every server. Compaq Insight Manager
provides comprehensive monitoring either on the network or remotely, ensuring smooth
running of SCO UnixWare-based servers and options. The Insight Manager console is a 32-bit
Windows application that can be run on a Windows NT 3.51, NT 4.0 or Windows 95/98
machines. Compaq Insight Management Agents collect information that can be viewed by the
console or any other SNMP management application.
Hardware Certification
Compaq certifies a full range of servers and options under SCO UnixWare 7. For a complete
product certification listing, visit the SCO website at www.sco.com/chwp/owa/hch_search_form.
Compaq Recovery Server Option
The Compaq Recovery Server Option increases system availability for UnixWare 7
environments by allowing one Compaq ProLiant or ProSignia server to act as a standby for
another similarly configured ProLiant or Prosignia server. In the Standby Recovery Server
configuration, two Compaq servers are attached to a common set of ProLiant Storage Systems
that contain a single copy of the operating system, application and data. If the primary
server fails, each ProLiant Storage System automatically switches from the primary to the
recovery server.
The recovery server then boots and the system is back online in minutes, without
administrator intervention. The Compaq Standby Recovery Server is a server configuration
provided by the Compaq Recovery Server Option. For more information on the Standby
Recovery Server and Recovery Server Option, see www.compaq.com.
Service and Support
SCO UnixWare 7 products are fully supported by Compaqs Technical Support
Organization. Compaq personnel are trained to handle any SCO issues related to Compaq
hardware and can directly escalate issues to SCO if necessary.

Compaq and SCO Partnership
In August 1997, Compaq and SCO announced a Strategic Alliance between the two companies.
In addition to enhancing efforts in the areas of joint engineering, service/support and
testing, the alliance established a multi-million dollar joint worldwide marketing fund
for the promotion of enterprise solutions based on SCO UNIX and Compaq Servers.
Also, in February 1998, SCO announced that Compaq and three other hardware OEMs had
joined the SCO Data Center Acceleration Program. Compaq, SCO and the three other OEMs are
committed to moving UnixWare forward into the Data Center market. Data Center-funded
resources will drive enhancements to the reliability, scalability and availability of
UnixWare 7.
