AlphaServer ES40, ES40cv, ES40lp, and TS20/TS40 Systems

The Fail Safe Loader Set is a collection of three floppy diskettes to reload console firmware. The diskettes contain the following:

Disk One contains the fail safe loader [FSL].
Disk Two contains the Loadable Firmware Utility [LFU], SROM, RMC, and TIG.
Disk Three contains the SRM and AlphaBIOS console images.

Notes:

  1. There are two flavors of SRM console firmware: one for Systems with EV6 CPU's and one for Systems with EV67/EV68 CPU's. Firmware is not compatible across cpu types.
  2. FSL firmware may not match the most current firmware. After completing the recover procedure, it is recommended the system be updated with firmware by CD. You can download the .iso image and create a firmware CD from the here.

Update Procedure Summary

Power down system to enable fail-safe loader jumper on the system board
Insert Disk One in floppy drive then power up system to load the FSL into memory.
Insert Disk Two then boot the LFU to update SROM, RMC, and TIG firmware.
Insert Disk Three to update SRM and AlphaBIOS console firmware.
Power down system and disable fail-safe loader jumper
Details are in the Update Procedure below.

Create Firmware Floppy Diskettes

Download and extract the Zip files to your Windows PC according to your system type:
For Disk One    » Fail Safe Loader Zip  For All Systems.
For Disk Two and Three for » ES40    » ES40lp   » ES40cv   » TS20/TS40 Systems.

Disk One - Create a Bootable SRM image using the following commands. Be sure to use the correct SRM image according to CPU type.

For System with EV6 CPUs:
C:\ mkboot clsrmrom.sys
For System with EV67/EV68 CPUs:
C:\ rename cl67srmrom.sys cl67srm.sys
C:\ mkboot cl67srm.sys
The mkboot utility takes approximately one minute to complete

Disk Two - Create a Bootable Loadable Firmware Utility using the following commands.
Be sure to use the correct LFU file according to system type.

C:\ mkboot   clu.exe      ES40 Systems
C:\ mkboot   ilu.exe
       ES40lp Systems
C:\ mkboot   flu.exe
       ES40cv Systems
C:\ mkboot   glu.exe
      TS20/TS40 Systems

Disk Three - Console Firmware Images
Copy one SRM image and the AlphaBIOS image to a FAT-formatted diskette.

For Systems with EV6 CPUs:
C:\copy clsrmrom.exe A:
For EV67/Ev68 CPUs:
C:\rename cl67srmrom.exe cl67.exe
C:\ copy cl67.exe A:

For all systems
C:\ copy clarcrom.exe A:

Firmware Update Procedure

Start of Procedure

Disk One - Install FSL Jumper and Invoke Fail Safe Loader
Use the FSL only if you need to recover your system to get to the SRM console prompt.

  • Power Down System.
  • Enable fail-safe loader by moving motherboard jumper J22 to position 2-3 position.
  • Insert Disk One into floppy drive.
  • Power up system; this will invoke the FSL. The FSL is an SRM console image which
is loaded into memory after power up. Once loaded into memory, the SRM console prompt >>> is displayed.
  • Proceed to Disk Two

Disk Two - Update SROM, RMC and TIG Firmware
Start of procedure:

  • Insert Disk Two into floppy drive then boot the LFU floppy.
    >>> boot dva0
    UPD>
  • Switch to LFU manual update mode:
Type exit then type Yes to enter LFU manual update mode.
  • Update RMC, SROM, and TIG
    UPD> update rmc
    UPD> update srom
    UPD> update tig
    Proceed to Disk Three

Disk Three - Update SRM and AlphaBIOS Console

  • Insert Disk Three into the floppy drive then do the following:
  • For System with EV6 CPUs.
    UPD> update srm -path fat:\clsrmrom.exe/dva0
  • For System with EV67/EV68 CPUs.
    UPD> update srm -path fat:\cl67.exe/dva0
  • For All Systems
    UPD> update abios -path fat:\clarcrom.exe/dva0
  • UPD> exit

End of Update Procedure
