Manually Update Console Firmware [Tru64 Unix Procedure]

This Procedure Requires Software Subset - OSFDOSTOOLS40

To determine if you have this software, type # setld -i | grep OSFDOSTOOLS

Console firmware consists of SRM, AlphaBIOS, SROM, RMC, and TIG. This procedure requires two floppy diskettes - diskette one contains the bootable Loadable Firmware Utility, SROM, RMC, and Tig firmware.  Diskette two contains the SRM and AlphaBIOS console firmware. Firmware is updated by invoking the LFU using "manual mode" as shown below.

Download the following to a directory on your Tru64 Unix System

» mkbootfirm - to create a bootable floppy under Tru64Unix
» cru.exe - Loadable Firmware Utility plus SRM firmware.
» crarcrom.exe - AlphaBIOS console image.

Create a Bootable Floppy - Diskette 1

  • Insert floppy disk into floppy drive
  • # cd (to the directory where the files were downloaded)
  • # fddisk -fmt /dev/rfd0a (to format your floppy disk)
  • # chmod +x ./mkbootfirm  (to make this file executable)
  • # ./mkbootfirm cru.exe | dd of=/dev/rfd0c bs=64k  (to make file bootable on the floppy disk)
  • End of procedure for diskette 1

Console Images - Diskette #2 This procedure creates a floppy in MSDOS format then copies console images from a Tru64 Unix directory to a DOS directory.

  • Insert floppy disk into your floppy drive.
  • # cd /dev
  • # ./MAKEDEV fd0
  • # cd [to the directory where the files were downloaded]
  • # ln -s /dev/rfd0c /dev/fddrive
  • # fddisk -fmt /dev/rfd0a (this formats your floppy disk)
  • # /usr/bin/mtools/mformat -s 18 a:
  • # /usr/bin/mtools/mwrite crarcrom.exe a:\crarcrom.exe
  • End of procedure for diskette 2

Update Console Firmware

Insert the bootable floppy diskette into the ES40 floppy drive. Boot the floppy to invoke the Loadable Firmware Utility
>>> boot DVA0
UPD> exit
