Read the firmware release notes before updating firmware.

Choose a Method to Update Firmware

Update Method Requirements Description
» BOOTP Network Tru64Unix Server Update firmware from a network using BOOTP protocol.
» MOP Network OpenVMS Server Update firmware from a network using MOP protocol.
» System Disk OpenVMS System Update firmware from a system disk.
Updating firmware from a SAN disk is not supported.
» Bootable CD-ROM CD Reader/Writer and Recording Software Create a bootable firmware update CD-ROM.

Create a Bootable CD-ROM

AlphaServer GS80/GS160/GS320 Systems » gs320_v7_3.iso

  1. Copy the iso image to a PC or system with CD writing abilities.
  2. Record the .iso image to CD-ROM using recording software.
  3. Boot the CD-ROM to invoke the firmware update utility (e.g. boot dqa0)
    Press the enter key when prompted for the bootfile name. (e.g. Bootfile: [ENTER])
  4. Type update to update firmware
  5. Type exit to leave from the firmware update utility.

BOOTP Network Update - Tru64UNIX

Firmware Image
» gs320_v7_3.exe

Download the firmware image to a TRU64Unix Server.
Register the Ethernet MAC address of the client with the TRU64Unix administrator.
Invoke BOOTP from the client SRM terminal. (e.g. boot eia0)

* Please consult your administrator for additional information on BOOTP booting.

MOP Network Update - OpenVMS

Firmware Image
» gs320_v7_3.sys

Download the firmware image to the MOP directory on an OpenVMS system. Apply this command to the downloaded file to ensure the file is in the proper fixed record format for MOP booting:

$ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:512,rat:none) file-name.sys

Consult your administrator for additional information on MOP booting.

System Disk Firmware Update - OpenVMS

Notices:

  • Updating Firmware via a Disk in a Storage Array Network [SAN} is Not Supported
  • Updating I/O option firmware in ODS-5 file format is not supported(ODS-2 required).

Download the firmware image to an OpenVMS system then enter the following commands:

  1. $ rename firmware image to FWUPDATE.EXE
  2. $ set file/attr=(rfm:fix,lrl:512,mrs:512,rat:none) FWUPDATE.EXE
  3. $ copy/contiguous FWUPDATE.EXE dka0:[sys0.sysexe]
    (replace dka0 with your system disk name)
  4. Shut down the operating system, to get to the console prompt
  5. Boot the update utility: (for example, boot dka100)-flags 0,a0
  6. Enter following in bold after the Bootfile: prompt:
    Bootfile: [sys0.sysexe]FWUPDATE.EXE
