Installing Microsoft sound card on AlphaServer 1000/1000A systems

Tru64 to HP-UX 11i Transition Benefits Calculator

Use this procedure to install a Microsoft Sound Card (ISA)in an AlphaServer 1000/1000A server running Tru64 UNIX V4.0.

  1. Install Microsoft Sound Card in EISA slot.
     
  2. Power up the system and run the Eisa Configuration Utility (ECU) from the SRM console to add Microsoft Sound Card.

  3. At the ECU main menu, select "Add or Remove Boards"
     
  4. Highlight "Microsoft Sound Card ISA Adapter Definition"
     
  5. Press < return > twice to add Microsoft Sound Card to the system configuration file, then press < F10 >.
     
  6. Select "Step 5: Save and Exit EISA Configuration Utility."
     
  7. Power down the system.
     
  8. Install Tru64 UNIX according to the Tru64 UNIX installation documentation.
     
  9. Install Multimedia License PAK.
     
  10. Install Multimedia V2.1 Kit.
     
  11. Select the appropriate subset(s) to be installed. After the subset(s) are loaded, the system will display the following:
    Do you wish to install the 
    Microsoft Sound Card option
    device driver at this time? 
    (e/i/d/y/n) [y]:
    (press <return> to install driver)

    Do you wish to rebuild the kernel
    at this time? (y/n) [y]:
    
    (press <return> to rebuild the kernel)
     
  12. After the kernel is re-built.
     
  13. Copy the old kernel from /vmunix to /vmunix.sav

    # cp /vmunix /vmunix.sav

     
  14. Move the new kernel to root directory.

    # mv /sys/'SYSTEMNAME'/vmunix /vmunix
    (where SYSTEMNAME is the hostname of your system)
     
  15. Reboot the system.

    # shutdown -r now

     
  16. After the system has rebooted, log in as root , and run the Multimedia installation verification program.

    # setld -v MMERT210
    
    - Testing Audio
    
    (make sure a speaker is attached to the Microsoft Sound Card)

    - Accessing all Wave out Devices
    (device 0 is the Microsoft Sound Card)

    Would you like to play a short clip on
    the Device? (y/n) [y]:
    
    (press <return> to hear the audio test)

    Would you like to play a short video clip to
    the display device? (y/n) [y]:
    
    (press <return> to run the video test)
     
  17. At the end of the video clip, the verification program will report a successful installation.

    Multimedia Service 
    for Tru64 UNIX, V2.1 IVP Succeeded.
